This post is sponsored by African Pride Dream Kids Detangler Miracle Texture Manageability System, but all opinions, results and anecdotes are my own.
Last week, I shared a post about how excited I was to try the new product line from African Pride called the Dream Kids Texture Manageability System (what a mouthful) on the Ladybug, Lil Miss, and yes, even Sir Twizzler. I love the fact that this system does not include any harsh chemicals, and is not a relaxer, texturizer, or keratin treatment for children.
I’m going to fully admit that my girls, heck, my children, do NOT like getting their hair combed. Nathaniel went so far as to get locs so that I can only manipulate his hair every 4-6 weeks. The others however, aren’t old enough yet to deal with locs, so they must have braids, and twists put in. While I love the look of their natural hair, I will be honest in saying, that having a looser coil sometimes gives me a bit of breathing room to do more things around the house. Like, sleep. When I let the ladybug know that we were going to give her a new hairstyle, she looked at me with a bit of uncertainty, but was THRILLED when I told her that she would be able to wear her hair down for church on Sunday. THRILLED! There is something about little brown-skinned girls that gets them all excited about wearing their hair in a “grown up” hairstyle. I remember it all too well.
We started with her natural hair, which if you remember, when not in braids, looks like this:
The ladybug has pretty thin hair, with a coil that is a little bit more relaxed than mine. For the most part, when I braid her natural hair, it doesn’t creep out of the braids like Lil’ Miss’ does. It’s just a different texture, and I have had to find different styles for the both of them. Thank goodness for their Mor Mor Baby (my mom) who semi-patiently helps me figure out styling options.
After washing with the Gentle Cleansing Shampoo, I applied the Inner Active Leave-In Conditioner, and let it sit for 20 minutes. She didn’t need the entire bottle in the kit, since her hair is fine, so I discarded the rest. After 20 minutes, I began to blow dry her hair – a process that neither of us likes very much usually, but it went relatively well this time. I just had a flashback of mornings in the kitchen. Ahhh, sweet nostalgia! As you can see, I didn’t blow dry her hair to full straightness, because I wasn’t looking for a super straight follicle since we would be flat ironing. This was the first time that I was using a flat-iron on the Ladybug’s hair, and I didn’t want to over process.
After we were finished flat-ironing, and one hundred and twenty-three questions were asked, I let her see the finished product and she was super excited. So much so that she continues to ask about being able to wear her hair down ALL of the time. That let’s me know that I did a pretty good job, for not having a cosmetology license, OR my kid just loves me unconditionally.
The random shaking of the head so that the tresses would move should have hurt her neck, but it didn’t! You know how it was for us growing up ladies! She reminds me so much of the ladies on my dad’s side of the family with this hairdo. While we do have the option of keeping her hair straight for 6 weeks, we can snap those curls right back by washing with a clarifying shampoo and going about our business. If we do want to continue the straight hair for six weeks, they do have a maintenance shampoo and conditioning system to help. Having these types of options in hair combing in the Houseful makes me happy!
If you’re still wondering if this is for you, know these little facts:
The Dream Kids Detangler Miracle Texture Manageability System does NOT alter natural hair texture, so that your child can go back to their natural tresses.
You can also use this in conjunction with relaxed hair. It helps extend the life of your child’s relaxer without the added chemicals.
This is a great way to blend relaxed and natural textures when your child is transitioning to natural hair.
The maintenance shampoo and conditioner included in the boxed kit helps to keep the hair tangle-free, humidity proof and reversion resistant.
As a wonderful end to this post, I get to offer one of my great readers a Dream Kids Detangler Miracle Texture Manageability System of their own. I will be having a meet and greet to show off the product in person, but if you don’t live in Chicago, and would like to try it out, here’s your chance! The giveaway is open to anyone in the United States and will be closing at midnight July 9, 2014.

I’m going to wear it in Shirley Temple curls. 🙂

We’re at the stage that we just wear ponytails or her natural curls.

My kid wears her hair in twists. I would use it to retwist.

I would love to try this on my Koko! I always wondered would products like this change her curl pattern. I see this one won’t. She hates getting her hair combed also but always wants to be dolled up and fancy. How does that work? Lol! I’m going to look for these products. Thanks!

A product that helps a little girl feel her hair is special and good is a great product. I like that it is not permanent since it is for children.

You might think I’m crazy, but I want to try this on my little man’s hair!

Lynda,
I tried it on Sir Twizzlers hair, and it relaxed his coils. I just didn’t blow dry or straighten (LOL!)
