The Lion King holds a special place in my heart. While it ranks in my top five favorite Disney movies of all times, the soundtrack is one of the more special soundtracks from the entire Disney catalog. This is because this soundtrack shapes some of the most memorable times that my sister Jessica and I shared back when it came out. Whenever a new Disney movie was released in theaters our entire family waited with bated breath until it hit VHS because then our dad would purchase it on the release day, and we’d sit and marvel over the animation for DAYS – even months on end. We always spotted something new in The Lion King, and to this day, I’ll watch and find something else that I have never seen before.

I’m not sure what drove our deep love of the score for the Lion King, but I’m pretty sure at that point in time, Jason Weaver had a LOT to do with it. He was at the height of his career, and he was cute to boot. Now, I can appreciate the magnificent swells in music, and the simplistic yet deep lyrics that ride the notes. Elton John ain’t too shabby either. Let’s not even mention the various emotions that you experience when you attach each song to its point in the movie. When Mufasa is killed by Scar, and Simba feels all alone. The soundtrack transports me right back to those weekday afternoons with my sister, when we pushed the VHS tape into the VCR (yes kids, we had a VCR) and recited every single line from start to finish. It was a tradition of ours. It was a bonding ritual. I miss it.

To this day, I still get all happy when Circle of Life bursts from my speakers. The cry from the beginning of the song, to the chant that repeats over and over again. Jason Weaver singing I Just Can’t Wait to Be King, and who can forget Jeremy Irons and Be Prepared? Then, there’s Hakuna Matata – it means no worries, for the rest of your days. Seriously, I don’t think that a song should be something that you lean on during times of grief or stress, but that one was it for me. Amazing how music heals and soothes, and brings back such fantastic memories.

This is why I’m happy to have these special Legacy Collection CDs of The Lion King, Mary Poppins, and Sleeping Beauty to listen to while running errands, or during down time with the kidlets. The music is fun to dance to, and I get to introduce them to songs that were created years before they were born, and they still love it. I mean, with a release 20 years ago, it still feels like I’m a 14-year-old who is way excited about a cartoon, and not caring. Just being able to listen to the words flow in my office makes me geek out!  I’m even excited to be giving away all three on the blog!

I have to choose an oldie, but goodie, "Dumbo" because of the song, "Baby Mine". I love, love, love that song!

One year for Christmas, I am not sure how--I suspect my mother bought one a month or devoted a serious amount of her Christmas Club account to the Disney movie records. I listened to them over and over and over again. I particularly loved Mary Poppins. I regretted that the same experience wasn't available for my kids. I am so excited it will be available for my grandchildren! And...just because Thatgrandma might play them a good bit just to check them over.
