Bully Series: From The Perspective of the Teacher

Follow Me on Pinterest

Hello, and welcome to our next installment in our Bully Series here on Houseful of Nicholes. Today we are joined by another guest blogger of sorts. This actually was delivered to my inbox by an old friend of mine who wants to stay private for reasons that you will understand in a moment. Here they looks at the life of the bully, and they ask if there is anything that we should be doing for them as well. Please welcome them!

I also just read your blog about bullying and wanted to share a sad story from school this year, but never have liked posting on blogs and such. Anyways…

I was also bullied on and off and alienated from groups throughout grade school (mostly in grades 5-8) and never really “fit in”. It was terrible and I would never want to relive those years. Many people say “high school years are the best of your life!” I hated this saying and hoped and prayed HARD that this was NOT true. I could not imagine going through the rest of life WORSE that this. Fortunately, I stayed to myself and a few close friends and “flew under the radar” for the most part. I discovered life does change and in fact “gets better.” I can not imagine being targeted like you were. Bullying makes me so angry and sad when I hear about things like you shared.

Until recently I had only looked at bullying from that perspective.

Weddings, Breakdowns, Texas and Vlogging or: How I Coped with A Car Full of Nicholes

Follow Me on Pinterest
Me, happy for reasons you will understand after reading.

Well HELLOOOOOOOOOOOO HoNeys! For those of you who follow the blog closely, you will notice that it’s been almost three weeks since my posting last, and now you’re getting a handful of posts from me. First of all, how lucky am I that you are still reading? VERY! However, my modem went out and it’s just too much work to transport three little ones to Panera or the local library daily to do posting, so we just dealt with the hand that I was given. It wasn’t too bad though, however, I have missed you all like crazy! I even had a chance to make homemade vanilla extract. You can read about that right below this post.

Anyhow, I had a chance to witness another one of my buddies get married to the love of her life and it was beautiful. In true Nicholes fashion we decided to make a nice long trip of it and drove. To. TEXAS. If you really haven’t been following me (and shame on you if you haven’t) I will take the time to let you know that we live in Chicago. The wedding was in a suburb of Houston. We thought no problem, however, the road trip gods decided to throw a mega wrench in our plans.

We were SUPPOSED to leave at midnight Friday morning to go and swoop up our friend Roshini – the personality behind Glamazini.com and continue our trek to Memphis, TN. We were SUPPOSED to then rest for a couple of hours to then get back on the road to head to Houston where we were SUPPOSED to check in on Saturday afternoon. No bueno. Here’s how the story really went.

Left Chicago Friday afternoon after finding out that rental car companies suck. We weren’t even giving a second thought to taking our car because on our way  back we were SUPPOSED to swoop back into Memphis and pick up some stuff for the twizzlers that my aunt had for us. Didn’t happen. Instead we arrived at Roshini’s house at dark o’clock in the evening and continued with our trek. I was sleeping fitfully when I felt Mr. Nicholes quickly veer off the road unexpectedly in Deliverance Town, AR (about 15 minutes outside of Memphis, TN mind you) and pull into a service station. I asked what was wrong and he said that something broke under the hood. Ummm, excuse me, WHAT?! The service station that we pulled into only worked on big rigs and couldn’t help us out. I immediately heard banjoes playing the background and started to worry a little. Of course my paranoia turned out to be all for nothing, and we were picked up by a local towing company and back on the road SEVEN. HOURS. LATER. Did I mention that we had the twizzlers too? I doubt that they really cared. All they knew is that they had their mommy, and open tap on breastmilk for 1200 plus miles.

and Houseful of Nicholes

The good thing is, we were with good company. We laughed and talked, and then I mostly slept. All my giggles ran out though when it said that we were supposed to be in Houston in a short amount of town, and the gps took us on a tour of Texas as if we were filming for the Travel Channel. 30 hours later we made it to our destination and got to the hotel and I could literally TASTE a hot shower and the front desk worker informed me that they had cancelled my reservation. No bueno. Roshini then walked into the lobby – saw my face – and decided to take over before I lovingly rearranged the hotel lobby. Everything was fixed and I will say that the entire rest of the weekend was a pleasure. On the upside, I got to hang with a few more of my blogger buddies: One half of  Cosmopolitan Kids, two fourths of  Colored Girls Blogging and the owner of Greenelight Photography . The wedding was beautiful – and I have been authorized to post some of my photos that I took of them on the blog. Congrats to Mr. & Mrs. C – thank you for allowing Mr. Nicholes and I to be a part of the beginning of something so beautiful and sacred and we wish you MANY years of marital bliss!

SWAK!

All in all, it was a good trip, and I would do it again in a heartbeat just to see my good friend become one with her husband – just not TOO soon. ;)

I Am Beautiful Day

Follow Me on Pinterest

So, today, I was going through my blog roll – since my son decided that on a vacation in the Big Easy he wanted to STAY IN! And in going through all of the blogs that I visit, one struck a truly raw chord for me.

I Am Beautiful Day

I went to a predominantly Caucasian grade school – and by predominantly, I’m saying that for the majority of the years of being in grammar school, I was the only black female in my class. How about them apples? Just like the author of this blog, I was teased incessantly and my attackers took it a bit further by calling me a pink a$$ baboon, or by taping various pictures of primate families on my desktop for me to discover each morning. Overall, just like her my sarcasm was honed into something quite dangerous and for a while, I didn’t trust anyone saying that I was beautiful. For some reason, it took me transferring churches when I was 13 and catching the eye of my now husband to soften my hard shell from grammar school. I wish that more of our young ladies took their beauty for what it is. ESPECIALLY since we see so many celebrities trying to get the full lips, backsides, busts and warmer skin complexion that we were born with. Now don’t get me wrong, EVERY person that God makes is beautiful – it’s just up to us to accept that He knows what He was doing when he created us.

Make it a great day!

Pregnant Women Can Look Good Too….

Follow Me on Pinterest

Even those of us who are pregnant with multiples.

Recently I had the pleasure of being the Event Coordinator for The Broken Brown Egg’s Infertility Awareness Gala . Right. I’ll let the irony and blessedness of all events marinate on your brain for a second. ;) Anyway, I was going crazy trying to find a dress to wear that didn’t make me look like I was wearing a mu-mu (as comfortable as they are, they weren’t appropriate dress for this event) or take the savings that I have for my first born to go to college. I mean, someone should really talk to clothing designers and tell them that maternity wear is usually for NINE MONTHS and FURTHERMORE who wants to wear the SAME evening gown to every formal event that may take place during the duration of a pregnancy?!

Enter Belly Bump Boutique and Julie the owner and you have a happy pregnant GORGEOUS woman. Well, if I do say so myself. Just take a look yourself and see….

I think that Mr. Nicholes and I look pretty darn cute. He with his understated swagger and I just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE how the dress made me feel (not hot) and that it made my clearly ENORMOUS chest not look so enormous. You all think that I’m kidding. We’ve moved to the E class people. E!

To give more background on Belly Bump Boutique , I did ask Julie what made her go into this business, and she said that she saw a need that wasn’t being filled. She stated that pregnant women value looking good – even moreso (sometimes) than women who aren’t with child because our bellies just make everything so obvious. So, if you are looking to rent a dress – yep, rent, she is the person to go to. Each rental is for a 7 day period, and she provides cleaning and pressing for you in the rental price. Not a bad deal if I do say so myself. Especially when you walk away feeling like a princess with a beach ball attached to your belly. :)

Traveling the World Without Ever Leaving Your City

Follow Me on Pinterest

Hey guys! I just wanted to drop in quickly to give some love to one of my new favorite blogs out there – Cosmopolitan Kids – http://cosmopolitankids.blogspot.com . These two young ladies are blogging about their adventures with toddlers throughout their cities and states. This blog touches my heart for so many reasons. The first being, these are the types of trips that my mother and maternal grandmother made sure to take their children on, and being the fruit of their efforts, I make sure to try and expose my children to all areas of diversity and culture throughout the city so that they can live a life as rich as I have thus far.

The second reason is because of the reputations that young black mothers sometimes get with not being as active in the lives of their children as mothers of other races are. This is not a statement meant to ostracize any of my readers or followers, but one to state that I know what is being said by “society” (ooooh, big bad society) and I want to do something about it – not to make a statement just for “society” but make it the norm in our household, and not something that is seen as being any different than visiting our public library.

Go ahead and check them out http://cosmopolitankid.blogspot.com - and it doesn’t hurt that they are hosting a giveaway at the moment. When you do stop by, let them know that The Nicholes sent you. ;)
