The Houseful Reads: Fifty Shades of Grey

Fifty Shades of Grey (Fifty Shades, #1)

Well, it’s more like Mrs. Houseful read Fifty Shades of Grey. I’ve been done with it for a while, but I did decide to go ahead and throw my review out there with the other hundreds of reviews floating around the internet.

First of all let’s just get the obvious out of the way, the writing is horrid. And not necessarily horrid in the way where the grammar is all out of place or whatever, but horrid as in extremely corny. And the words that she uses for the female and male anatomy are relegated to “down there” and “their sex” 😐

So far, that’s my largest complaint. Honestly. The story is endearing, and it’s interesting to see just how much Ana Steele gets under Christian Grey’s collar when he is supposed to be the one doing the controlling.

Now, I do suggest that if you are not the type who can read adult literature without easily being embarrassed or offended with certain language, this isn’t the book for you. I also suggest that if you’re looking for a book that is going to cause a great deal of deep intellectual thought, then keep right on looking. This is merely a fun and kind of sexy book – although I will be the first to admit, I won’t be installing a Red Room of Pain in my household any time soon – that explores, albeit semi-erroneously, the side of BDSM that many of us are inquisitive about, but not so much that we’re signing up soon.

I will say, the author is doing something right, because with all of the complaints out there about it, there’s a wait list in the Chicago Public Library 400+. So I’m willing to bet that there will be a SLEW of “Fifty Shades” babies like someone mentioned on twitter. I’m all for getting things popping in the bedroom of married couples that are having a sort of ho-hum era. And if this books brings the sparks back – then go for it.

Have you read Fifty Shades? If so, how did you like it? If not, are you just on the wait list or are you boycotting?

I read all three and while the writing leaves much to be desired, the love story is what kept me reading.

Good review - basically what you said. It's not great writing but a somewhat interesting story. Even though the writing isn't great people are loving the books because it is getting folks some *ahem* action whether they want to admit it or not.

Still haven't read it yet, even though I've had it forever. Guess all the hype isn't motivating me. I'll get to it.

I've finished the first two books and have about 30% left of the third. Although the book is erotic, I looked at it more as, can you deal with someone or be in a relationship who has completely different views than you. Also, how much of yourself are you willing to change to be with somebody. Is it giving up or comprising? By the second book, I was skipping over the sex scenes because they were soooo corny! Really, is someone really "exploding all over themselves" five times a day?!?!!
