Hark How The Bells! Sounds Of the Season

Celebrations, Holidays, NaBloPoMo, Reflections

 Joy To The World

Hark how the bells, sweet silver bells

Do you remember holiday assemblies when you were in elementary school? They were the highlight of the holiday season. We celebrated every single holiday during the assemblies, and looked forward to learning more songs that our families may have not sung. It was such a magical time for me when I was a kid. I looked forward to hearing Jingle Bell Rock, and I Have a Little Dreidel from classrooms all over the school. Packing all of those kids into our assembly hall must have been a bit difficult for our teachers, but boy did I live for them!

All seem to say, throw cares away

Now, I have four children of my own, and the sounds of the holiday season for me is a bit different. I mean, we LOVE Christmas music. We all have our favorite songs too. Two of mine are Whitney Houston’s Joy to the World and Do You Hear What I Hear. Mr. Houseful is partial to Nat King Cole singing  The Christmas Song. The cellist loves Jingle Bells by the McClain Sisters  while the ladybug is really into Paul McCartney’s Simply Having A Wonderful Christmastime while the twizzlers are all about Feliz Navidad. It’s so nice to see their eyes all light up whenever their favorite song comes on. One of the radio stations here in Chicago flipped the switch to holiday music last Friday and they have been playing Christmas tunes day in and out. I’m here for it.

Christmas is here, bringing good cheer

The sounds of the season are always glorious for me. Laughter, bells galore, snow crunching under boots, and snowballs hitting the coats of the children (and sometimes adults) throwing them. I listen to the cars whooshing over the snow that has found it’s way into the streets. I float on the sounds of the wonderful feel good movies that play in the background. The ripping of wrapping paper, and tape. The clink of kitchen utensils against each other as large family meals are planned. Coats being zipped up to prepare for time outside in the cold. Stomping of boots to get snow off of them. The sounds are what makes the season.

To young and old, meek and the bold

I look forward to this time of year with HUGE anticipation no matter how old I get, and it always makes me marvel that each season of the year has such a great sound library to go with it. What are the sounds that you look forward to hearing during this time of year?

I love Christmas music too! I’m really looking forward to getting out my Straight No Chaser CD and hearing their version of “The Twelve Days of Christmas.”

I love Christmas too. I am partial to the Kenny Rodgers/Dolly Parton CD. I think because I heard it so much growing up, I just have to play it during the holidays!
