Chicago Sights | Frogs: A Chorus of Colors

You all know how much I love Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, and their constantly rotating exhibits. It’s also the place where we go and have a yearly photo with the bottom three right outside the museum. I actually try to do a seasonal photo, but I digress. The new exhibit Frogs: A Chorus of Colors opens today.

The littles love visiting the Nature Museum, and they love whenever a new exhibit comes out to mesmerize them along with the exhibits that stay put.

Frogs: A Chorus of Colors

A little about Frogs: A Chorus of Colors

The exhibit gives people the chance to go eyeball to eyeball with 70 different and vibrant, vocal, charismatic and colorful frogs from around the world.

“From interacting with the largest frogs, to some of the smallest and all the ones in between, this is an opportunity to experience and discover frogs like never before,” said Deborah Lahey, president and CEO of the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. “We’ve created a hands-on, fun exhibit space where families and children can discover the amazing and adaptable world of frogs through play and a variety of interactives.”

Inside Frogs: A Chorus of Colors, guests will have the chance to let their imaginations run wild with hands-on activities such as dressing up in colorful frog costumes, a mini zip line, jumping skills test and creating their own frog call chorus.

Through these interactives and unique experiences, guests will better understand and appreciate why frogs, who roamed with the dinosaurs, are among the most visually stunning and adaptively remarkable species on earth. At the same time, guests will discover why frogs and other amphibians are experiencing major population declines and some of the reasons why.

“Frogs are endlessly fascinating for scientists and we think guests will come away from this exhibit feeling the same way,” said Allison Sacerdote-Velat, Ph.D, curator of herpetology at the Chicago Academy of Sciences / Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum.

The Nature Museum is home to the citizen science project The Calling Frog Survey, which offers people of all ages the chance to be citizen scientists and help support these remarkable amphibian species.

We always look for ways that this can help in our homeschooling journey as well. Through this exhibit the littles will be able to explore frogs in a hands-on way that we can’t really do at home.

  • They will interact with tree frogs, bullfrogs, horned frogs and dart poison frogs
  • Interact in habitats that depict the environments that the frogs live in
  • glide like a frog on a mini zip line
  • test their jumping skills against frogs
  • model frog costumes
  • emulate frog calls
  • play the similarities/differences game between frogs and toads
  • check out a Goliath frog skeleton
  • perform a virtual dissection (so cool!)
  • learn how frogs protect their eggs and tadpoles

We’ll be visiting soon, and sharing photos with you all, but just wanted to give you a heads up so you can plan your visit as well! HOPPY LEARNING!
