I consider it a big win if I can get either of the twizzlers to stand still long enough for a photo of them in something that I have sewn. The task becomes exponentially harder if they are in love with the item made for them. This was the case when I put the Kyoko Tunic Dress onto Lil’ Miss Twizzler the Sunday before Christmas.
I LOVE THIS DRESS.
I finished it early that Sunday Morning and prayed that it fit her as I didn’t take nary a measurement before sewing it up. I’m such a sewing rebel, I don’t know what to do with myself.
Did I mention that I LOVE THIS DRESS!
The ladybug spent the night with my parents, so she wasn’t able to see what her sister was wearing (and you’ll see her outfit in another blog post) and when we got to church and got settled, she looked at Lil’ Miss Twizzler and then at me, and stated very matter of factly:
“Mommy, how come you made Lil Miss a karate girl dress and not me? Will I get one too?”
Mind you, she was already eating up the attention that her custom-made dress was getting her, yet she wanted this one as well. I count it all joy.

It’s inevitable that my children will grow up and shudder at our sort of matchy attire. I can’t bring myself to use the same fabrics, but isn’t it enough that we’ll all be in the same cut? Oh well, who will remember when they’re three and five?
Here is the dress fresh off of my sewing machine last month, and it was definitely a sight for sore eyes. I’m super proud of my bias placement, and the fact that I didn’t mess this entire thing up royally.
Here are some common questions that I see on pattern reviews, so I’ll answer them here as well.
Pattern: Kyoko Tunic/Dress Pattern by ModKid
Pieces: Five main pieces, and a variation of skirt options. Even though I used one fabric for my skirt, I chose to cut the pieces as if I were using three different fabrics as instructed.
Techniques Used: Making and sewing on bias tape, gathering, attaching sleeves.
Level: I feel that an advanced beginner can sew this up pretty easily. Even if you just purchase the bias tape instead of making your own, it shouldn’t be a horrible project.
Will You Make More: Why yes, yes I will. Did you SEE that she has this in an adult size as well?! I’ll also probably start fangirling all over her social media accounts too, but I make no promises.
Patty Young also has a massive amount of other patterns in her shop that I’m chomping at the bit to purchase. I’ll collect them one by one, but I’m super excited that she has so many great patterns that are still age appropriate! She also has a line at JoAnn Fabrics & Crafts and will be releasing another one next month. It looks fantastic! When my kids were little I only had time to sew in the middle of the night so I never took measurements. I just based whatever I was making off a RTW shirt/pants/etc that fit them well. I’m glad she likes it as much as you do.
Thank you Kim. I usually only sew for the kids the night before I want them to wear it. It’s such a bad habit, which is why her first dress got trashed and I had to go with something else. I should know better, or at least measure them, so that I can have them ready to glance at when I am cutting sizes out. But it adds to the mystery of the big reveal. Thank you for coming through!

Thanks Sarah! I love making bias tape, I just hate sewing it on, mostly because I always end up not catching the back portion, and I hate having two lines of stitching on it. However, Patty’s pattern makes it super easy to do, and it comes out looking super professional. Thanks for the compliments on my smallest girl. She’ a hoot.

That dress is SUPER cute! My mom dressed me and my sisters the same. ALL THE TIME. I was a year older and my sisters are twins. Everyone thought we were triplets :/ I think that might be why now I try to pick fashion pieces that I think others wouldn’t choose. Its like those commercials where two ladies walk into a party wearing the same dress. LOL They are young still so they might not mind. Enjoy these early years!
Arelis, I had MANY of those times, and photos too. My sister and I would purposely choose other stuff when we got older just because. I hated the dressing alike too. The ladybug will let us do the same style, just different prints, so they are not, as she says “the same all the time, mommy.”
