Leona's Turtle Cheesecake

Last week, I was able to trek out to the Rogers Park area of Chicago, and check out the new menu of Leona’s Restaurants. Let me tell you, if you’re looking for home style Italian fare, Leona’s is the place to go. OFten times when our family is in the same city (mainly Chicago) we’re known to go and hang out in a restaurant and eat and laugh until our bellies can’t take anymore.

As a matter of fact, in 2011, we hosted my grandmother’s 8oth birthday at a Leona’s restaurant and had a blast!

This year, Leona’s is introducing a brand new menu, and I got a taste test of all of the items. I left satisfied, and ready for some of their Kick – A garlic bread soon after.

A pizzeria staple in Chicago since 1950, Leona’s Pizzeria and new owner, Tania Mavrakis, announced today it is relaunching the Leona’s brand featuring a new, classic, homemade Italian menu made with fresh ingredients.

Under new ownership since September 2013, Mavrakis took the opportunity to revitalize the Leona’s brand including a new logo, new menu, new website and new online ordering portal. The new classic Italian menu features three kinds of lasagnas, three kinds of ravioli, Leona’s famous Romano chicken, nine signature sandwiches including meatball, Italian beef and Romano chicken, five salads, burgers galore, and of course, Leona’s famed, always made to order, pizza.

“It was important in reviewing the menu, that we emphasize Leona’s roots with traditional, homemade Italian recipes using fresh ingredients,” said Mavrakis. “We also evaluated the menu regarding price. It was paramount, in my mind, that the menu be wallet-friendly to our customers.”

The new menu is available for dine in, carry out and delivery and is available online at www.Leonas.com for digital ordering.

The evening consisted of small plate tastings of  their famous Kick-A Garlic Bread, made from ciabatta, Cannelloni Bites with homemade marinara, Roast Beef Sandwiches (SO GOOD) Three different raviolis – Asparagus and Grana Padano/Shrimp and Basil/Veal Portabello, Tiramisu and Turtle Cheesecake (pictured above.)

The ingredients were FRESH and the taste was definitely homestyle comfort. All food is made to order, including the sauces, and  I can totally see our family gathering around the table for special dinners and recounting the events of the week over great food and lots of laughter.  One of my favorite appetizers , calamari, is made from just the tube of the squid. That basically means that you will have nothing but large perfectly crisp and tender rings, instead of tentacles. Well worth the cash that you spend on it.

Get this though, the entire menu is available for delivery. THE ENTIRE MENU, including ALL drinks! So, if you just can’t gather your thoughts together, or haven’t changed out of your pajamas for the day, you can always have Leona’s delivered to your front door, and still have laughs and love around a table.

Oh, and they serve Pepsi. If you never remember anything else about, you need to remember my undying love for Pepsi.

With that being said, if you’re ever in the Chicagoland area, and need a great restaurant to visit, I humbly suggest Leona’s as you will not be disappointed. I promise you that!

I absolutely love, love, love Leona's. There was one on Taylor Street by the Hospital district and they have awesome lunch specials. Portions are indeed generous and the prices are good! It is worth a trip...try the one in Oak Park too!

I didn't realize Leona's has a new owner. We haven't been there for a long time, and I think we need to change that! Your photos look yummy!
