New Orleans, Louisiana – An Exploration in Culture for the Nicholes

Where y’at? How’s ya mama dem?!

Our adventures in New Orleans was great to make it simple. To be surrounded by so many sights, sounds, and smells at one time was a little bit overwhelming to say the least. And no, it was NOT because I am pregnant. It was mostly because we had to decide what we wanted to do first. Our trip started with checking into a resort that we own property at on “The Avenue” – or to us non-locals, St. Charles Avenue in the Garden District. At first, we didn’t know how far we were from Downtown New Orleans, but we quickly realized that we were literally kitty corner from the hustle and bustle of one of the hearts of the city. Let’s not forget the bonus fact that we were right across the street from our street car stop, so no long walks to get to any type of public transportation. For $5 – we could ride any streetcar, or bus for an entire day. Being from Chicago, we know the value of this, and quickly swept up our day passes.
There’s so much to comment on, but I don’t have that much time or space to literally go through each and every adventure day to day, so I’ll show you some highlights. Mostly of food, and local fare. Here we go:
VooDoo B-B-Q – we had our first meal here, and it was good. A lot of food, but totally worth it since it was 1. Down the street from our hotel, and 2. One of the first restaurants we saw turning onto our street from the expressway.

Our next day was full of walking and exploring the River Walk! Fun stuff. The cellist noticed that everything had a green, yellow and purple color scheme, and we then began talking about Mardi Gras in New Orleans. He compared it to the Taste of Chicago in our city  and we continued with the journey.

We then took the free Algiers Ferry across the river and enjoyed a bit of a historical neighborhood when we docked. They have a jazz tour that you can dial into and listen as you walk along the river. It’s free, and educational – and gives you a peek into the musical genre that so many New Orleanians hold dear to their hearts.
On this side of the river, also lies Mardis Gras World – which we didn’t get to see, but we found out that they are the company responsible for all of the floats that you see in the Mardis Gras parades. Overall, I would have to say that this was one of my favorite “unexpected” stops since it was free, yet still so full of information and the true feel of New Orleans to me.
We then hopped back on the ferry to be transported back to the River Walk, and got to see a few other sea vehicles in action:
I think that I am going to have to make this post a sort of series since I am looking at all of the pictures that we took, and all of the food that we ate! I will be back with another blog post on our further adventures. However, I will leave you with this bit of information that I found out about myself – when I travel, my bra straps seem to turn against me. I don’t think that there is one single picture where they didn’t try to be one of the subjects in the photo.
Tune in later – as we continue to let the good times roll……
