Life Is Messy

Life Is Messy

I’m not sure where this post is going to go, but I know that today, while making GAK with the littles, I realized just how messy life is. Even when you’re having a blast like they were, things around you can get splattered on.

This may be a homeschool post, a homesteading post, a marriage post, a parenting post, or just a straightforward self-care post. Or maybe, it’s not any of those. I mean, in every, single piece of my life, something good always produces something messy.

Case in point. I canned peaches, and made peach preserves, and tomatillo salsa, and pickled okra, beans and any other thing that I could pour boiling vinegar over. While all of those jars look so awesome perched on my shelves, the sink is atrocious. There are little globules of peach skittering down the side of the funnel that I used to put the preserves into those quilted glass jars. I can do nothing but sigh, and start rinsing and loading the dishwasher.

I could also talk about birthing babies, but do we REALLY need a visual of THAT process?

Building our home was messy. Heck it STILL is messy, because we’re having things done to it to “finish” it up nine months later. I’m sure that when we are finished, we’ll be happy. *insert LONG SIGH HERE as of August 19,2017, they STILL aren’t finished*

Today, homeschooling was messy. The kids didn’t seem to notice as they gleefully punched, poked, and prodded their homemade GAK. Cornstarch, water and food coloring were everywhere. As they slid off of our kitchen benches and washed their hands and faces (don’t ask) of the splatters, they giggled and talked about liquids and solids in a way that they can understand, and I sighed again and proceeded to clean the table.

Enjoying homemade GAK

I’m taking time to remind myself that life is messy. Sometimes that mess comes BEFORE the good stuff, and sometimes it comes in the middle, or right after. It just comes. I’m reminding myself not to focus on the mess, but to make sure that I take time to enjoy all of the GOOD that comes my way. New jobs, new roads to explore. New years to enjoy with the ones that I love.

Life is messy.

But it sure is beautiful.

In the midst of my chaotic week, this post was like splashing my face with clean, cold water. Thanks for the reminder. Deep breaths.
