The Houseful Goes Bananas at Go Bananas

Follow Me on Pinterest

In a continuation of our Spring Break adventures, the Houseful visited Go Bananas in  last week. The cellist had gone there when I was pregnant with the ladybug (almost five years ago, GAH! Where is the time going?!) but he was pretty excited to go back. I also made sure to call to see that there would be plenty of things for the twizzlers to do as well. Let me tell ya, there’s nothing worse than two toddlers seeing everyone else around them having fun, and being told that they can’t do anything.

Go BananasLike with any family place I visit, I went to their website to see if there were any deals or things that I should take advantage of. There were, and while we probably couldn’t go every month, I’m sure that the times that we do find ourselves within the walls of Go Bananas, I won’t have spent a small fortune for the Houseful to enjoy themselves.

Unlimited ride wristbands are $13.99 for the day, and tokens are available for various large portion discounts. Socks are required as well.

The rides are also various. With clear instructions and height requirements as to who can ride them or not. The twizzlers were able to ride the train for a while – and loved it, even with the consistent loop – and there was also a small area right under the soft play jungle gym that they were able to enjoy. I think that it’s pretty ingenious of the Go Bananas staff to make sure that it was a little off from all of the other attractions, so that small children wouldn’t be distracted by much. However, the bowling lanes was also perpindicular to that area, and we had to call Sir. Twizzler back a couple of times.

Go Bananas Bowling Lanes Go Bananas Kid Area Go Bananas Kids Area Go Bananas Kid Area Go Bananas Kids AreaWe were able to get by with 20 tokens for each kid, especially since the twizzlers didn’t really “play” any games.

One game that the ladybug loved and kept winning 200 tickets from was this Jackpot one, I really hope that I’m not creating a gambler. Her stance was on point.

Go BananasShe also happened to enjoy the Banana Squadron ride, and if I could convey the seriousness in which she lifted and landed the banana plane through pictures, I STILL couldn’t do it justice. What can I say, when my girl plays, she puts EVERYTHING into it.

Go Bananas Banana Squadron Ride Go Bananas Banana Squadron Ride

There is also a bouncy house, that Sir Twizzler was afraid of, but Lil’ Miss embraced with such a vigor that I was amused. There is also an indoor roller coaster, and bumper cars as well.
All in all, if you’re looking for an affordable place to take your children to, this is a pretty good option. Safe, clean, and the pizza wasn’t too bad, or so I’m told, since I didn’t get a slice.

Ticket redemption is as expected. Your child wants gifts that require way more tickets than you may have. The great thing is, you can go ahead and match the ticket requirements penny for points, and just buy it outright, but don’t tell your child that!

The staff was courteous, and even came to open attractions if they weren’t manned (as per their policy) without any sort of grumbling. This will for sure be one of my rainy day options during the summer, and the school year.

Disclosure: I was offered a compensated visit to Go Bananas in exchange for an honest and fair review. All opinions are my own.

Justin Timberlake’s 20/20 Experience – He’s BACK! #JT2020

Follow Me on Pinterest

So, I’m a big fan of Justin Timberlake’s. Lately, it’s been more for his comedic timing than his singing because it’s been SO LONG since he put something out. That’s why I was pretty excited around the release of his new CD, 20/20 Experience on March 19! Let’s face it, he’s a triple threat, singer, actor, and cutie. That totally counts. He also shares a wedding anniversary date with me, so at this point in time he can do no wrong. None.

I went to Wal-Mart today to pick up the actual CD (no downloads for me this time, because I want to be able to take it with me in the car!) and I was a little bummed to see that there were only 10 tracks on the back. However, upon immediately opening the CD and popping it into my player, I didn’t mind as much. Every single song is surrounded by a great beat and great lyrics (even if there are a couple of swear words in them – yes, I’m a bit of a prude, and still blush easily at swear words.) and had me doing the driver seat dancing that you only see on the highway. Yep, I don’t mind dancing in my car. Never have, never will. Continue reading

Earlier this year, I received Nurturing the Soul of Your Family by Renee Peterson Trudeau to review, and like most things, I fell behind. However, once I cracked it open and begin to read, I couldn’t stop, and my reaction surprised me. As  some of you may know, this year is SO emotional for me in regard to my sister, the fact that I’m getting older (and am closing in on having to decide whether or not to add more to our Houseful) and I’m starting to reflect a LOT on choices that I have made to get me to the exact place that I am in now. Purple Monkey Playroom: Bucktown Drop In Play Space

DSC_1612

Talk about a gem in the middle of the city! Purple Monkey Playroom was descended upon on a very snowy Tuesday afternoon by me, Mr. Houseful and the three littles. I do have a sneaking suspicion that the cellist would have enjoyed his time there as well, but I’ll let him continue to say otherwise. Located right of of Armitage and Western at 2040 N. Western, this quaint spot provides parents and children alike a welcome refuge from the hustle and bustle of the city. With free coffee, tea, and wi-fi, parents will love the space as much as their children do. DSC_1609 As a mother, I realize the price of peace. And it is listed above. Mr. Houseful and I sat and figured out that if we visited once a week, it would come to more than the annual pass. And I’m sure that during the spring, summer and fall, when I don’t feel like taking everyone to the museum or zoo and chasing them around, this will definitely come in handy. Either way, it won’t be the last time that Jessica (the owner) sees me and my little ones.

As you can see, Lil Miss Twizzler was extremely impressed from the moment she first put on the red tutu.

DSC_1606

Right off the bat, the ladybug and Lil’ Miss found these tutus in the dress up area that they had to put on. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they had one small enough for Lil’ Miss. They think about the tiny people, and I love it. DSC_1607 The balance beam that’s safe enough for little ones. I did hold a hand of each twizzler as they attempted to go across (hence the reason there are no pictures of them walking across.) DSC_1615 There was obviously lots of shopping to do, while dressed in that pretty red tutu. DSC_1610 Sir Twizzler headed straight for the pony. Dreams of being a cowboy perhaps? DSC_1611 There was a tiki-hut of sorts in the north east corner of the play space. Housed under there were a tool counter, and a kitchen. My children played with each area equally. I loved seeing that there were some tools in the refrigerator and some food in the tool case. DSC_1620 The area for parents to sit and drink their complimentary tea or coffee while watching their children play the day or afternoon away. DSC_1618 The kitchen area. There are various beverages (although no Pepsi – I’ll have to whisper in Jessica’s ear about this) available for purchase, including juice boxes and milk for little ones. DSC_1623 The action figure, and blocks area. DSC_1622 This is where the collective spent most of their time. This small slide which the twins approached with some sort of trepidation, soon became the go to attraction for the time we were there. DSC_1631 DSC_1627 DSC_1644 DSC_1645 DSC_1648 DSC_1649 DSC_1652 DSC_1654

The ladybug loved that there were all types of sparkle and ruffly things to dress up with. DSC_1674 And Sir Twizzler who donned his Preacher’s coat and mouse ears went on a task to find as many mouse ears as he could. He maxed out with three pairs. DSC_1673 DSC_1672 DSC_1671 DSC_1670 DSC_1669 DSC_1668

There was also music playing softly in the background that we took advantage of. All of it was of course kid friendly, and the addition of tutus encouraged massive amounts of twirling and ballerina like moves.
DSC_1680 DSC_1681

All in all, I would have to say that we had a fantastic time with this little corner of playland that Jessica created. It was also kind of nice to have the entire space to ourselves for about an hour and a half of the two and a half hours that we were there.

And when the day outside looks like this:

DSC_1635It’s always great to have some place to go to shake your sillies out. Purple Monkey Playroom provides just that space. However, be prepared for your children to give you one of these when you all get into the car, or happen to walk home:

Lots Of Pockets Side Pocket It looks like I have my sewing mojo back! Hallelujah! Last night I decided to start sewing bags and clutches to stock my Houseful Of Stitches Etsy Shop. So far, I’ve put three new bags in there, and this week I should be able to sew a bit more – I hope at least. This beauty pictured above is the Lots of Pockets Tote by Michelle Patterns. I love her patterns – they are super easy to work with, and the finish is fantastic. I also love that I don’t have to slip stitch linings too much with her patterns. Inserting the magnetic clasps according to her directions was different for me, but I can totally understand her reasoning. From cutting to sewing, I think that I spent about three hours on both bags. THAT’S how simple they are!

Of course I have plenty of photos for you as well. Lots Of Pockets Tote 1 Lots Of Pockets Tote Front Lots Of Pockets Tote Lots Of Pockets Inside Pocket Clutch

This little number is the pocket clutch. Literally perfect for putting in a coat pocket and going. For those days where you only want to carry essentials, cash, credit cards, chapstick or unmentionables (why are they unmentionables anyway? It’s a way of a girls life, but I digress.) There are two inner pockets, and the flap wraps around to insure that everything stays put. Pocket Clutch 1 Pocket Clutch 2I’m also loving the fact that I got my label perfect this time around. All other attempts have been slightly wonky. Pretty soon, I’ll be able to do this in my sleep!

That’s pretty  much it. And just in case you aren’t noticing, I’m trying to stay organized on the blog. I mean, you’ll still get my random postings, but I would like to bring you all regular programming around these parts. It’ll probably take me until the middle of February to form the habit, but I’m working on it!

Thanks for stopping by and Make It A Fantastic Day!

What I Wore Sunday: Tribal Print

Simplicity 4236

So, I totally missed last Sunday. Blah. I thought that I was cute too. I’m still struggling in the shirt department. I feel like I don’t have enough girly shirts in my closet, and then when I look, I realize that the feeling is true. I’m sure that I can make this “look” work with some sort of black blouse-y lace number. Oh well, I tried. Other than that, my skirt is one of my sewing creations. It’s a Simplicity pattern, 4236 to be exact.

This skirt was super easy to sew up. Two panels, a zipper and twill tape, and I was finished! AND it doesn’t feel like a home-ec project to me!

I really like this pattern, so I think that I will be adding more of these simple skirts to my wardrobe.

My shoes I got in a clothing swap years ago, and I thought to wear them with this look to give more of a casual feel. I’m lacking a LOT in the jewelry department. I will get better, but I will go ahead and admit right now that I have pierced ears, and 99% of the time, I do not wear earrings. I BEGGED my mother to get my ears pierced, and she relented when I was in 7th grade only to have me go earringless the majority of the time.

Yeah, I’m totally not one of those ladies who feels naked without earrings on.

However, let us pay CLOSE attention to the fabulous twist out that I am sporting a top my head. They NEVER come out like this unless I’m thinking about taking it down and doing another hairstyle. >womp< This style was achieved with the twists that you see from the last few days of my cruise – shea butter, shea moisture coconut & hibiscus hair milk, and my two hands.

Just to be clear…I have on stockings. It was a little chilly in Chicago today. LOL!

Lucky for me, I was compensated for this BlogHer Book Club review. Lucky for you all opinions expressed are my own.

The Willpower Instinct: How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do To Get More of It6

How Self Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do to Get More of It
~Kelly McGonigal, Ph.D

Okay, I’ll just go ahead and admit it. I am not really good with my willpower.
There.
I admitted it.
I have a bit of an issue when it comes to lots of things (not to be shared at the moment, maybe when I get better with controlling it.) and I know that I need to do better, yet I still don’t.

Enter the opportunity to give myself a virtual slap with The Willpower Instinct: How Self Control Works, Why it Matters, and What You Can Do to Get More of It by Kelly McGonigal, Ph.D

Enter another opportunity for me to get an even bigger slap in a chapter that starts off with McGill University, a rat, and the pleasure center of the brain, and ends with me realizing why seeing a new purse in Target sends me into a fit of glee.

My biology loving brain was engrossed so much in this book that it took me a while to realize that I might possibly be the only person with no sheer amount of willpower when it comes to shopping. All because of dopamine. The anticipation of a reward will send me over the fiscal cliff if I allow it.

>sigh<

Such a hard pill for me to swallow, yet I got it down.

She brings to light some other arenas that get the dopamine levels in our bodies heightened. Guess what? FACEBOOK is one of them. I’m pretty sure most of you know the main culprits:

Food, Alcohol, Shopping, Sex. But, FACEBOOK? Say it isn’t so!

McGonigal breaks down the how and why we are able to be seduced by big markets, and how we can go about practicing self control better than our elementary school teachers ever imagined.

So, tell me, how good is your willpower? Are there areas in your life where you know if you go to a certain place, or see a certain thing, you just HAVE to have it?

Let me know in the comments, OR come and join the conversation HERE. I’m pretty positive you’ll make some interesting discoveries about your willpower.

Pattern Review: I Think Sew’s Flores Clutch

I Think Sew Flores Clutch

YAY! I’m back to sewing again! This time, I’m sewing up lots of clutches and bags for the Etsy shop. This beauty is the Flores Clutch by I Think Sew, and it was a breeze to sew up.

There were ten pieces of fabric, and a magnetic clasp. That’s it. And in those ten pieces, three of the pieces were interfacing. Didn’t take a huge amount, and I’m all for not using a bunch of interfacing because of the cost.

From cutting out the pattern, to finishing up the topstiching took me an hour and a half. Love it. I bet that I could have a marathon of five or six to stock my shop, and not take more than three or four hours.

Flores

Right now, most patterns from I Think Sew are on sale for 50% off and she even has some that are on sale for 35% off as well. There are a few that are full price, like this Katie Boston Bag but it’s worth it. I’m loving the structure of that one as well! Can’t wait to pick it up.

I don’t know if you can see it now, but I have my labels! Finally! My bestie did the design for me, so be prepared to see them emblazoned all over everything. I did put them in an odd spot on this bag, so I hope that the recipient doesn’t mind. The labels were done by Sewnique (SBshop on Etsy) and she did such a fantastic job. We convo’d back and forth for a bit until I was satisfied with what I wanted (and believe me, I’m kind of wishy-washy with very easy decisions – Mr. Houseful hates it) and she never made me feel like I was getting on her nerves.

Label

So, I’m back in the swing of things, and can’t wait to show you all what I’m whipping up. I’ve also joined another swap, and can’t wait to show you what I’m thinking about making for my partner – but I won’t be able to post until I know that they’ve received it.

Until later, make it a fantastic day!

Everyone Wins with BabbaBox!

Follow Me on Pinterest

As a homeschooling mom, I’m all about trying to keep things organized in such a way that we can always find things when we need them. Too bad that all of my efforts fail miserably. So I just figured I would concede defeat and have fun with the kids while I can. Who can blame me when I have the likes of the twizzlers and the ladybug here to keep me laughing.

Enter the Babba Box.

BabbaBox includes 5 major components centered around the ways kids engage and learn: CREATE, EXPLORE, STORY TELL, CONNECT. “Create” are 2 projects they make themselves. “Explore” is an activity with a provided project or object to engage with the world. “Story tell” is a bestselling book that best represents the theme through a story. “Connect” is the digital downloads.

The BabbaBox is also super convenient, because it delivers ALL the materials and content right to your door so parents just need to literally open the box and start spending quality time with their kids.

Each box comes with a specific theme for the month, and for the month of January, the theme is Oranization. Boy do I need it.

Transform all of that post-holiday organization into fun, memorable time with your kids! Plus teaching kids about organization encourages ownership and independence – important qualities as they develop self-esteem and confidence.

As you can see, your children will be able to create bins to help keep their art supplies organized properly. They’ll even have labels to put on them!

Artwork will also have a place to hang while it is drying and then stay on display as well! Didn’t I tell you that everyone would win?

Because I know that a lot of our children learn best when they can attach a story to a concept, the BabbaBox also comes with Max Cleans Up from Max & Ruby fame. Off topic: where are their parents?! That’s not me (just in case you were wondering) but another great mom showing off the portion of the box that should make your house feel a little lighter. You can donate gently used clothing to thredUP and cash out in the meantime. So far, everything in this box seems to align with getting the new year started off with a bang!

If you’re liking what you see, or would like to see a little bit more from a purchasers perspective, you can head on over to BabbaCo’s Facebook Page and like them. While you there, why don’t you enter their holiday photo contest? You can be entered to win an annual subscription of BabbaBoxes or a $500 gift certificate to crew cuts by J. Crew.

Oh, and this can make a great last minute gift to any child that you know ages 3-6, you know, especially with Christmas four days away. No need to thank me. :)

Pretty groovy, right?

Disclosure: I was compensated in some form to share my opinions of the BabbaBox. All opinions are uniquely mine (but you all know that) and were not “given” to me to be passed on to you. :)

Pattern Review: Daytripper by Dog Under My Desk

Follow Me on Pinterest

I think that it’s pretty evident that I am a fan of sewing bags. If you browse my blog, you’ll notice that I’ve probably sewn more bags than I have clothing. It’s just the way of life this way. I met Erin Erickson of Dog Under My Desk fame during a random tweet of hers that happened to be retweeted into my twitter stream. I know it’s a bit melodramatic, but I think that it’s been a bit of a blessing to have run into her on Twitter. She is a great resource when it comes to the construction of bags, wristlets, and other carriers, and let’s just face it, ANYONE who knows the amount of things about interfacing should be on your favorites list on Twitter.

Anyhow, one late night this week (and Erin has as many as I do) she posted that she needed some testers to try out a new bag pattern that she was publishing. I jumped at the chance for several reasons. The first being that the bag looked gorgeous in her Instagram feed (she’s tested seven of these bags before even releasing it to other testers) and the second is the fact that I need a good airport travel bag for a cruise that is coming up for Mr. Houseful and I. To me, there’s nothing worse than having to have several bags as you are walking through the airport or touring a new city, or ship for that matter. I plan on making myself one of her wristlets as well to go along with the bag.

When you purchase the pattern, there will be pieces that you have to cut and tape together. I happen to prefer this because if I do happen to lose a pattern piece, I can just go to the downloadable pattern that I’ve saved, and reprint the piece that I may have lost (and no, I haven’t lost any pieces of this pattern already.) There are several pieces to cut – (a little over 50 with the interfacing and batting), BUT they are larger pieces that do not take lots of time to cut out. You’re also only measuring three other pieces for the handle and zipper pull, and that’s it.

Erin’s pattern comes chock full of photos along with the instructions, and will make those of us a little bit nervous about putting in a lined back pocket feel like we’ve been sewing for ages. I can even admit that I learned several things with this pattern – it wasn’t just run of the mill for me. I learned how to put in a gusseted zipper pull, a fully lined zippered pocket, AND how to string a strap through an adjustable slider. It’s a big deal people. HUGE!

Here are a couple of detail photos from my day of sewing.

Rolled up just like Erin would have done. Hee Hee!

Outer panel turned inside out.

I will tell you that I was a bit worried about sewing several layers of fabric, interfacing, and batting, but with the needle suggestions (which I already had thanks to sewing so many other bags) you’ll be just fine. I did not have non-fusible batting, so I used Thermolam Plus (which was fusible) and everything worked out just fine – no puckers, no wrinkles. You will also notice that my outside fabric is a little heavier than normal quilting cotton. I like using home decor weight fabric when making bags because it provides a little bit more structure (to me) than any quilting cotton that I’ve used AND it allowed me not to use so much interfacing since it’s sturdier. Don’t do this though unless you’ve sewn bags, because it really teaches you what the bag should look like in general. Then you can play around with the pattern later.

Two pockets on the front panel

Lined back pocket – with a zipper!

Zipper detail

Inside pockets – three in different sizes.

Rectangle ring

Zipper Gussets

Zipper Tab detail

I actually want to make another in denim and one in corduroy pretty soon. I’m not sure if I’m going to offer them in my shop just yet mostly because I don’t know where to price them. Basically out of sheer laziness.

So, overall, this pattern is a win, and if you need a nice travel purse – you should check this pattern out! I’ll also try to post a pic of the purse filled to capacity (comfort level of course) and give you an update.

If you’re looking for a bag, or something structurally sound to sew, check out her online shop or her Etsy shop
