Macy’s Celebrates American Icons

When you think of American icons, what are some things that automatically come to your mind? I’m assuming some of you answered with apple pie, barbecue, baseball. Or maybe some iconic Americans like Marilyn Monroe, JFK, Andy Warhol, Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Michael Jackson – I could go on.  Well, this month, Macy’s all around the country are paying homage to the Red, White, and Blue with some all day events highlighting those things.

I got in on the part of the festivities that included food, because well, I’m greedy, and who can pass up barbecue? Seriously, who can? No matter WHAT your food loves are, I’m pretty positive it can be thrown on a grill. I’ll wait while you think of all of the foods that prove my point. You’re welcome.

I really loved the way that the store was decorated for the day’s events, and while I wasn’t able to go to each and every floor, I did grab some shots of displays on the main level, before heading downstairs to see Barry Sorkin of Smoque BBQ on Chicago’s NW side.

Celebrating Fifty One

McDonald's, Houseful Of Nicholes, Birthday

On Saturday, my mommy turned 51 years old. Yes. 51. She looks great. Since I know that I’m cute, I realize that I will grow to be even cuter, because of this lady.

My dad informed me about a month ago that he was going to have her birthday party at McDonald’s. Yes. You read that right, McDonald’s.

Ladies, and gentlemen, if you’re reading this, you’re probably having the same thoughts that I did. RED ALERT MAN! YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG! But my dad (affectionately known as Poppy by the collective) stood firm in his decision to host a 51st birthday party for his wife of 30+ years at McDonald’s. Oh, I tried, and tried to get him to change the venue, but he stood firm. And because I’m a daddy’s girl, I stood firm in my support of him – and dared anyone to say otherwise.

On the day of her birthday party, we found out why.

My parents are empty nesters. They take little date nights here and there, and for lunch one day, they happened to stop in a local McDonald’s that was just built a little ways from our house. It’s “cute” for lack of a word at the moment. It doesn’t have a large dining area because of its location, but had enough for several people to gather. It was in this McDonald’s that my mom informed my dad that she could see herself hosting a birthday gathering there. Like, there. IN a McDonald’s. You know, the place usually reserved for kids who go gaga over the fries and toys in the Happy Meals? A McDonald’s. Full of reds and yellows, and burgers and fries. Yet also full of simplicity, and no atmosphere of NEEDING to impress others. You come, you sit, you eat, you laugh, you go home.

That’s what we accomplished on Saturday. I don’t think that I’ve seen my mom smile this much in a very long time. She was surrounded by friends and family, and the Sherlock Holmes of our family suspected NOTHING! I mean, it’s hard to surprise her. Really, really hard to surprise her.

But to see this look on her face when she walked through the door, was priceless.

McDonald's, Houseful Of NicholesBecause she had truly been bamboozled. My dad had me create a red herring invitation to give to her stating that she would be going to Weber Grill. This is important, because she has duly noted to all of our household that she doesn’t want to see Weber Grill for a good while (I think it has something to do with my father’s love of it) and my dad REFUSED to go to Famous Dave’s (my mother’s love.) So essentially, the invitation was meant to make her grumble a little bit.

Before heading there, my dad said that he wanted her to come inside so that he could grab something quick to eat. She came in, and that’s the photo that captured her when she saw everyone waiting for her. She was happy, and that made me happy.

Then the hugs started. Lil’ Miss Twizzler had her arms open wide to welcome Mor Mor to her birthday party and begin the festivities.

Houseful Of Nicholes. McDonald's , FriesSir Twizzler really came for the fries.

McDonald's, Houseful Of NIcholesMy mom and dad. High School Sweethearts. They’ve been through a lot, but they let me know that with God and a GREAT support system, marriage is well worth the rollercoaster ride.

McDonald's, Chicken McNuggets, Houseful Of NicholesI think that I should get some sort of compensation for all of these promotional McDonald’s shots. I mean, look at the cute kids!

McDonald's, Houseful Of Nicholes, Birthday PartyThe staff was phenomenal. In the background, you can see the store manager, Debbie holding my mother’s cake. She was a pleasure to work with, and didn’t make us feel like we were a big traveling circus having an adult birthday party in her restaurant.

McDonald's Happy Meal, Houseful Of Nicholes, McNuggetsThe ladybug enjoying her McNugget Happy Meal

McDonald's, Houseful of Nicholes, Mor Mor,

Mor Mor and the collective Houseful. I would like to direct special attention to the way that Lil Miss is posing. Seriously, who taught her that? My babies are growing up. It makes me a little bit sad.

McDonald's, Houseful Of NicholesThe cellist had her to himself for an entire 8 years before other grands started showing up. The bond is pretty strong.

McDonald's, Houseful Of NicholesNOT FIGHTING!!!

McDonald's, Houseful of NicholesMy oldest brother (and let me clear the air, that *I* am the oldest, he’s just the oldest boy) drove all the way in from New Jerey to surprise her. She was super happy.

McDonald's, Houseful Of NicholesMy sister in law (married to my baby brother) and Mor Mor.

McDonald's, Houseful Of NicholesBest friends since high school. This lady is the reason I hate bologna sandwiches. Apparently, she brought my mother one everyday while she was pregnant with me, and that’s all she wrote.

McDonald's, Houseful Of NicholesMy mom with the most handsome man this side of heaven. I almost had a paparazzi moment here. I mean…oh…my apologies.

McDonald's, Houseful Of NicholesMy mom and paternal grandmother. Let me just put it out there. Getting this woman to WILLINGLY take a photo AND look STRAIGHT into the camera while SMILING is nothing short of a miracle. She hasn’t liked taking pictures for as long as I’ve known her and this makes me happy.

The cellist, his grandmother, and great-grandmother.

McDonald's, Houseful Of NicholesMor Mor with all but one grandchild. That’s the nephew that can be seen HERE swinging on a tire.

McDonald's, Houseful Of Nicholes

And a photo op that I normally don’t get to have since I’m always behind the camera, my mommy and me.

McDonald's, Houseful Of NicholesLast, but not least, the entire clan (minus my baby brother who had to work.) We’re all busy, we’re all adults now (it happened so fast) yet I’m pretty happy to know that we’re solid. There’s nothing fake about this photo, and I can say with great assurance that everyone here has the back of everyone here. Did I lose ya?

Anyhoo, she got loads of gifts, loads of laughs, and loads of hugs from her guests. My daddy did a wonderful job, and I’m proud of him.

There are other photos, but they are of friends and colleagues of my mom and dad, and I don’t feel comfortable putting them on the blog without consent. Also a housekeeping note, this is NOT a sponsored post, and not a post open to criticizing people who happen to like McDonald’s. I’ll be open to the picket lines later. :) Have a great day!

Easter Dressing 2013

What happens when you make adorable outfits for your two girls, and matching bow ties for your son’s and then try to get them all to take a picture together?

If your answer was complete chaos, then you my dear are a genius.

While skimming the internet early this month, I found a pattern on One Little Minute that I decided to purchase for the Easter dresses of the ladybug and lil miss twizzler. I spent this weekend sewing them up (like any great mom – I waited until the last-minute when I also had orders to get out) and I think that they came out beautifully! The pattern was super simple to work with, and I love how professional the dresses ended up looking. The armholes are perfect, and the length and finish with the lining and main fabric was fabulous. Chef Ming Tsai’s Gosling Ginger Ale Cocktail

Goslings Ginger Ale Cocktail

Anyone who knows me, can attest to the fact that I am not a large drinker. In fact, wine is about as strong as I go these days, mostly out of the stigma that comes from a “church girl” indulging in alcohol, but also compounded with the fact that I just don’t like the way a lot of alcohol tastes.

So when I was offered the opportunity to review Goslings Black Seal Rum, I mulled it over for a while until I saw the recipe in full, and realized that I would be working with less alcohol in comparison to other ingredients. Suffice to say, it still took me almost three months to make the darned cocktail, because frankly I didn’t know where to go and pick up the Rum in the first place. #churchgirlproblems Continue reading

Justin Timberlake’s 20/20 Experience – He’s BACK! #JT2020

So, I’m a big fan of Justin Timberlake’s. Lately, it’s been more for his comedic timing than his singing because it’s been SO LONG since he put something out. That’s why I was pretty excited around the release of his new CD, 20/20 Experience on March 19! Let’s face it, he’s a triple threat, singer, actor, and cutie. That totally counts. He also shares a wedding anniversary date with me, so at this point in time he can do no wrong. None.

I went to Wal-Mart today to pick up the actual CD (no downloads for me this time, because I want to be able to take it with me in the car!) and I was a little bummed to see that there were only 10 tracks on the back. However, upon immediately opening the CD and popping it into my player, I didn’t mind as much. Every single song is surrounded by a great beat and great lyrics (even if there are a couple of swear words in them – yes, I’m a bit of a prude, and still blush easily at swear words.) and had me doing the driver seat dancing that you only see on the highway. Yep, I don’t mind dancing in my car. Never have, never will. Continue reading

5 Reasons Mrs. Houseful Should Attend #SoFabCon #LuvSoFab

Howdy!

If you’re active around the twitter and the “book,” you may be aware that come the first week of May, a sweet conference will be taking place by the name of SoFabCon – or Social Fabric Conference. Currently, I am a member of Social Fabric, and I decided to share with you all a couple of reasons (plus three) why I should be picked for the scholarship.

Like to hear them? Here they go.

1. I need to stay true to getting a photo of Ted Rubin’s socks, now that I have been alerted to how he rolls. I started the first of what I assume will be many photos this year at our #CBias event in Chicago. Gotta love a man that knows how to wear polka dots.

Ted Rubin's Socks

2. Chicago is a bit on the chilly side, and we ALL know what couples do when it gets too cold. I’m sure a flight out of the city for a couple of days will do the trick. I can’t risk adding more to the Houseful this year. Did you see that Mr. Houseful and I have been outnumbered since 2010? The cellist will be 13 this year too – I can’t photograph him anymore without signing release forms apparently.

DSC_1631

3. I really do love Social Fabric. They provided reasons for me to trick my son into doing a Book Report Board Display, take my daughter to eat ribs and meet Ty Pennington. I’d say, you want to see more of that, correct?

??????????????????????????????????????

4. A blogger who earns scholarships, is a better blogger: Honestly, it’s no secret that HFofNicholes is part of the bigger picture of me being blessed enough to stay at home with my children. Which means that I never get vacation time away from my children. We all love and adore the cellist, the ladybug, and the twizzlers, but mom needs time off (if going to a conference and willingly learning new things counts as time off) to focus on things that make me a better mother, and wife. Can’t forget Mr. Houseful – who will turn into Mr. Mom while I’m gone. It’s hilarious. His Michael Keaton is EXCELLENT!

5. I kinda of secretly want to room with The Peanuts Gang blogger. Yeah. I’m all about selfish reasons here. Samantha is cool peeps, and she and I will add SO much to the blogging conference. Don’t tell her, I’m stalking her…kinda. She’s all types of great, and honestly the reason that I am writing the post in general. Who can beat that You Tube submission she did?! Just trust me, we’re a double act (IF by double act I mean that one person doesn’t know UNTIL the act is happening)

So, there you have it. My reasons that I should be given one of the 12 scholarships to attend the first #SoFabCon in May! Quite honestly, I’m ready to start this year off with a BANG, and what better way to do it, than the So Fab way?

Full Of Words Wednesday: Happy Birthday Mr. Houseful

DSC_0707

This guy pretty much rocks my socks. I mean, I’ve known him since I was 13 years old.

Today is his birthday.

I’m pretty honored to be his wife.

Truly.

I know that I get on his nerves occasionally.

I know that I’m stubborn.

I know that we’ve been through a LOT in the 19 years that we’ve known each other.

NINETEEN.

He was the first person that I kissed.

He’s the first person that I’ve completely loved.

He’s who I got into trouble (extensively) with, while I was in high school.

He’s the ONLY person who has had my heart, mind, and even this slightly frumpy body.

He’s the first person that I usually call when I’m hurt, angry or scared.

He was the first person that I called the morning that my sister died.

He’s who I like spending lazy Sunday’s with.

He’s who I don’t mind riding around in a car with.

He’s who I can laugh at myself with. And honestly be okay.

He was the first phone call I made when my sister died.

He holds me when I cry.

And when I yell.

And when I am ambivalent.

He loves me, and I love him.

His laughter.

His perfect smile.

His hands.

I love that he’s my protector.

My covering.

The head of this household.

He’s my husband, and today’s his birthday.

Happy Birthday Mr. Houseful, and I look forward to celebrating many more with you.

Macy’s Celebrates Gordon Parks

DSC_1437

On Valentine’s Day, I had the pleasure of heading down to Macy’s on State Street (I’m still having a hard time not calling it Marshall Field’s, but it’s the Chicago in me – I still love the store) and participating in a Black History Series that is spanning the nation. Macy’s along with special guests are coming together to honor Gordon Parks and his contribution to the arts in the African American community. Chicago was honored to sit with Dr. Carol Adams, Eriq La Salle, Tar, Munson Steed and  for the evening.  The entire presentation was wonderful, and I must say that the panelists were very thought provoking.

The conversation was enlightening and I can leave you with a few tidbits from the evening:

Everyone needs to watch The Learning Tree, Lead Belly, Shaft (the entire franchise) and Half Past Autumn.

Shaft was NOT a blaxploitation film

Gordon Parks took the fact that he wanted to photograph things and it took him on a journey of authorship and filmmaker.

Gordon Parks is definitely the epitome of a modern day Renaissance Man. All of his talents became the weapons that he used to better his chances of succeeding in this world.

On the point of succeeding, we don’t need anyone’s permission to do so.

The way that Gordon Parks photographed his people, was not in a vein of selling them out to others. It was simply to show the black population in all of their varying states. From regal, to domestic. From the love that parents had for their child no matter how much money was in their bank accounts.

Black films are hard to come by from black directors. We’re still in the world of having others tell our story for us, because Hollywood is not allowing us to do it ourselves.

Thoughts?

I am a member of the Everywhere Society and Everywhere provided me with compensation for this post about Macy’s and Gordon Parks . All thoughts and opinions expressed herein are my own.
