AllState’s Foundation Purple Purse Challenge #PurplePurse

AllState’s Foundation Purple Purse Challenge #PurplePurse

Disclosure: This post is part of a sponsored campaign with The Allstate Foundation and MomSelect. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Given the recent events in the media regarding domestic violence, it’s pertinent that we know all the ways that it can happen to women AND men. More often than not, a woman is directly affected, and has to put on a face to the world that says that everything is okay. Not fair.

The Purple Purse Challenge helps domestic violence survivors who have been financiallly abused.

Did you know that domestic violence affects one in four women in their lifetime? That’s more women than breast cancer, ovarian cancer and lung cancer combined.  Most people think only of physical abuse when they consider domestic violence. Yet, financial abuse happens in 98 percent of all cases of domestic violence and is one of the most powerful ways to control a survivor. Financial abuse includes things like running up overdraft fees in a bank, calling a job until the employee is released from their job, or holding on to ALL of the money. It’s very unfortunate, and an often overlooked form of domestic violence because there may not be any “visible” bruises.

The Allstate Foundation responded to these staggering statistics by creating the Purple Purse program – the Foundation’s national symbol for domestic violence and financial abuse to raise awareness and get people to openly talk about this important issue. Allstate Foundation Purple Purse is making it fashionable to talk about domestic violence and the financial abuse that traps women in abusive relationships. The program ignites fundraising for more than 140 national, state and local domestic violence organizations. Allstate FoundationPurple Purse is asking you to join the Challenge to support a nonprofit near you. Supporters can visit PurplePurse.com starting September 2 to make a donation through October 3. In addition to community/local contributions raised, The Allstate Foundation is investing nearly $650,000 in thePurple Purse Challenge – the more donations each nonprofit gets, the more it can compete for Allstate Foundation incentive funding.

To help bring this important program into the forefront, actress Kerry Washington will lend her voice to the cause as an ambassador. She has designed a limited-edition purple purse, which will be distributed to help raise awareness. In addition, The Allstate Foundation is producing 80,000 purse tassels to attach to your favorite purse as a continual sign of support. Each tassel is attached to a removable card featuring one of five inspiring survivor stories, being sent to PurplePurse challenge participants and agents.

Since 2005, the Allstate Foundation has donated more than $49 million to help domestic violence survivors get back on their feet and to a more stable feeling. So, what can you do? You can visit to  Purple Purse , and give a donation – nothing is too small. Trust. I will be actively wearing my purple tassel with every single bag that I make from now until it breaks, because domestic violence in any form is getting out of control.

This is such a great cause! Thanks for sharing! Did you know that physical domestic violence is only a misdemeanor, while physical violence on a stranger is a felony?
